The favourite in the market is the Thomas Carberry trained (2) Diplomatic Jack. He comes to the Great Western Cup after an easy win at Burrembeet. He has posted 2 wins in his last 4 runs, including a BM70 over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley where he came from second in transit to overcome Humble Pie (a pretty handy horse). He has had 6 starts at this distance for 2 wins, enjoys the Good conditions, and maintains Neil Farley in the saddle after the last start victory—every chance!

There is one main threat in (3) Sophie’s Revenge, who has already won in a higher grade this preparation—beating Tough Vic to win the BM84 at Penshurst. She has been racing in similar grades taking on the likes of Tolemac, Hunamosa & Influential Girl. She has 9 starts over this range for 4 wins, and also maintains her jockey Melissa Julius.

There is very little between them, and when looking at their closing sectionals Diplomatic Jack is the one posting the better times. That could be the difference. Outside of them, the others look unlikely, (1) Under Oath needs it wetter.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
