The punters will be supporting (1) Hot King Prawn despite a disappointing run in the G1 Hong Kong Sprint. He was expected to run well that day, but looked to have little left in the tank despite Joao Moreira giving him a pretty cushy run in transit. When he did get the split he looked the winner for a moment, only to fade-out and overrun by a number of the swoopers. If he repeats that run, he will not be winning this. However, he has had a nice little ‘freshen up’, which is a positive, and together with another nicely drawn gate, he looks ready to fire here.

One who beat him home was (5) Computer Patch, who similarly looked likely for a brief moment before getting nutted. He had been racing well prior to that run in Group 2 features, but has since failed in a Group 3 after getting checked in running. If he switches back to his prior form we can expect another bold showing. The wider draw will be offset with his gate speed, so there is a good chance he won’t be far away.

Another one in that blanket finish was (4) Wishful Thinker, who flashed late from the back of the field to finish 4^th. He can improve further, and if the front runners burn each other, he will take advantage.

This is all about (1) Golden Sixty the absolute star of Hong Kong racing. The price is around $1.22, and for good reason. He has an impressive record of 15 starts for 14 wins, and every other statistic looks impressive, including track, distance and condition (most importantly, times). You’re forgiven for not getting involved from the punter’s perspective, but he is a confident anchor in all multiples. He simply wins.

In the 8 horse field, you may want to find something work backing at a place or in an exotic. For me that’s (2) Southern Legend ridden by Karis Teetan. He is almost always in the money, and often the place-getter behind Golden Sixty. No reason he won’t be again. Something on a place bet is a smart move.

(3) Waikuku will get the fine services of Moreira, while (4) Ka Ying Star will be in the mix at a solid price.

This is another fantastic race—the 4 year-old Hong Kong Classic Mile. Joao Moreira maintains the ride on (1) Sky Darci who placed 2nd in a Group 3 last start. Prior to that, he lined up a picket fence with three wins. He is super consistent and always genuine. It’s impossible not to consider him a leading chance. He is a grinding type of horse who will just keep coming, and the step up from 1400 metres to 1600 metres is a smart move. The gate is never a concern, as he seems to land in a nice position and just move around or through them as required. Top selection!

The Hayes stable brings a couple of former Australian runners here who look to have some nice value, with Talladega—now (13) Beauty joy having his second start in HK. The other one is (7) Shadow Hero who is third-up after two improving runs at his new home. A Group 1 winner over 1600 metres back here in Australia, he should be ready to fire, and at the price he won’t be going around without my support. Zac Purton is in the saddle, another fine Aussie export, and we should see him drop back and look to swamp them late.

The next best appear to be (3) Enrich Delight and (10) Lucky Patch.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
