There appears to be two main contenders here, as represented in the market. (1) Shotgun Sonny has placed twice in five runs overall, most recently a second over 1050 metres at Toowoomba. His form lines look to be the superior across the field—and with Kyle Wilson-Taylor taking the reins, who is proving to be a handy apprentice—he can get the prize today.

The top weight (1) Urbino had been racing in fine style when they decided to take on much tougher company at Eagle Farm last start in a bm75. That day he closed from eleventh in running to arrive fifth across the line—it was a reasonable performance. Today he drops back to bm62 (he has already won in higher grade) but stays at the same distance range. He gets a small claim, and a Soft track (7: 2w 3p). Considering it is a field of seven he is not going to need a lot of luck to find clear running, and should have every opportunity. He just looks better than this lot.

Like the look of the short priced favourite here (3) Hallsidehankypanky. The stable has been in solid form recently, winning 18% across the last 50 starts. Hallsidehankypanky stays in the CL3 grade, gets a nice 3kg claim, and takes on another small field. The Soft going should not be an issue, and from the inside gate we can expect him to take the leading role and attempt to set the pace. Essentially serve up another effort similar to his last start, which resulted in a win. This looks no harder.

At the risk of becoming predictable, it’s another favourite that looks to be the one here over the 1100 metres. (4) Sacred Zim has had one start for the Toby/Edmonds stable and placed second behind Mint Strip The two of them pulled away from the rest of the field (which appeared to be everywhere as competitive as this one) and despite not being able to pull back the winner, he did appear likely in the running. Fitness appeared to beat him that day, and he would no doubt have come on from the run. (6) Missy Em won a trial and is the main danger.

The one at odds is (8) Proudly Grey who ran second twice this preparation, and on both occasions looked to have the race in his sights before being run down. The big query however is he goes from 800 metres to 1100 metres, so the task of holding them at bay gets even tougher.

(9) Judder goes back to CL2 grade here after competing in a bm66 last start. She placed fifth on that occasion, and was not disgraced, albeit a little disappointing after chalking up a maiden and bm58 win earlier in the preparation. She was beaten by Prince Of Arran, which lets be honest, doesn’t mean a lot these days. At $8.00 she looks to be a smarter bet than the favourite (5) Terrius who admittedly has similar form.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
