The first of the day and we have the maiden runners taking on the 1112 metres. Normally wouldn’t want to get too involved in a race like this, but based on prior form there looks to be only a couple of proper chances in the race. (11) Universal Lady from the Maher/Eustace yard comes in after a second place at Moe where she went around as favourite. That maiden wasn’t the strongest, but she has been consistent and always in the mix. Five starts overall without coming worse than fourth.

Speaking of consistency (3) Gutsy has now raced ten times for eight places. The last four runs he came second (between 1000 and 1200 metres) and is starting to prove costly for anyone backing him. Today he gets the blinkers on and Michael Dee gets the ride. The change up of jockey and gear could prove the difference today. But there is little between the top two in the market.

The one at odds is (1) Angerstein who can improve from a first-up third place. That race was reasonable behind Krispy Kev who looks to be able to step up to the next level later in the day. Happy to play two here and stake 3 units against 1.

There are plenty of first starters here with loads of unknowns. Of the raced competitors there are two clear stand-outs in the market, which looks to have it right—albeit they are closer in the market than we would have them. (12) Taylor’s Dream for the Maher/Eustace stable wasn’t disgraced last start, but did find a few better. Her overall record is pretty inconsistent and it is hard to be confident at the price.

(13) Verspertine for the Beg stable is the other in contention. First-up she placed third behind Crosshaven (by a solid margin) but ran well in defeat. Despite the margin, that’s a pretty good line to follow. She comes back from a good spell, so the query is fitness first-up. Considering her best effort last preparation was first-up, happy to assume he is good to go. There is really nothing else in the field that we can make a solid case for, so he looks one of the better bets on the program.

This is another maiden that sets-up similar to the first race. We have a perennial place getter in (12) Silk Jacket going around as favourite. She has raced ten times for seven places (this prep: 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, & 3). The owners must have some serious patience. Can she do it today? Similar to Gutsy, she gets the blinkers on first time today—and this could be the difference. John Allen keeps the ride which is a positive. The draw is not the kindest, with a wider gate to contend with, but with even luck Allen should come across and sit mid-field. He just needs to find some cover. There is very little outside the top chance, so making it a clear pick.

This race is between the three top weights. (1) Hunamosa is arguable the best horse in the field but gets 62kg for the privilege. The second behind Sophie’s Revenge in a bm64 looks good enough to be winning a similar race, but that was against a smaller field. What he does like, is this track, with two wins from three starts. He has raced in bm78 graded company previously, so this should be well within grasp. The inside draw is also a positive, and Billy Eagan should take luck out of the equation. He goes on top at a pretty good price.

Close behind in my selections is another perennial place-getter (3) Locko who has had his chances in easier races but failed to get the prize. Could easily improve that short margin, but might just again find one or two better.

(2) Makfly is one of those and despite some inconsistent results is up to this one. He is going to be the biggest threat to Hunamosa. He likes this track and distance, and looks to have every chance here. This is the peak of the grades he has competed in, so if there is a query, it’s the class.

Considering Sportsbet are tempting us with some same race multiple promos, this is a race worth playing it noting the clear top selections.

This is a wide open race with plenty of chances—and a few with clear improvement to come. (1) Krispy Kev steps up after a maiden win, but when reflecting on his performances to get the maiden out of the way, the tougher field here looks to have him stretched. He can still race well, but the odds would want to drift to bring us in.

(2) Lani Bang Bang is clearly capable and comes here after a couple of nice trials—she will be ready to fire and can take it to the favourite. Her only win came on the Heavy track, so really there is a query about the better ground today. Her win was only by the thinnest of margins.

(4) Shorthand is on the upward trend and won on Good going first-up. She won by almost a length and looks to have improvement. The Dabernig/Hayes yard will expecting another good performance and she deserves favouritism here. She draws alongside the threat Lani Bang Bang so they should both get their chances.

(1) Sasayuri has won in this grade twice prior and gets the weight (63.5kgs) as her treatment. The claim of Laura Lafferty will help, and she has been riding extremely well for an apprentice. There is no reason why the eight year-old won’t be in the mix again today.

(4) Patented can also improve on his last run for the Freedman stable.

(9) Singing Sword may be the one with arguably the most untapped potential, but she is a risk after a couple of average performances since her maiden victory. She has raced some good horses, like Housay and Melba Storm, which does put her in well here.

At the price there is scope to take a couple here—the one that’s been winning, and the one that should be.

Tip: (4) Singing Sword $4.00 Sportsbet

Also backing: (1) Sasayuri $4.80 Sportsbet

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
