Launceston Racing Tips: Wednesday, February 23rd

Billy Bestford previews the feature races on a big day at Launceston.

We’ll be making a rare trip to Tasmania to preview the feature races at Launceston on what looks a strong meeting, highlighted by the Launceston Cup.

The track is currently rated a soft 5 with the rail out 3 metres.

Billy Bestford will be keeping his powder dry early but is pretty keen on a few towards the latter part of the day.

Find his best bets and previews for each of the key races from Race 7 onwards.

(8) Ayahuasca went within a whisker of knocking off Yonce first up and we have seen what that horse has come out and done since (bolting in at Flemington on Saturday). Should take benefit of race fitness out of that run and I think she’s got a bit too much class for many of these.

(1) Deroche is one of the better Tasmanian-trained horses going around and grows an extra leg here at Launceston, winning 10 from 15 starts! Will roll forward from the wide gate and I expect her to give a massive sight and looks the value in this race.

(13) Miss Tuppence is only lightly raced and has won 5 from 9 career starts. She gets well down in the weights and I think she’s been set up nicely to run out this trip now.

(1) Ho Ho Khan bolted in last start at Hobart and has really started to find his groove now in Australia, winning two on the bounce. Gets up 2kg on that last start win but he put 4L on In A Twinkling there and I don’t think that horse can turn the tables based on that. Maps for a perfect run throughout and as long as he’s close enough at the turn he will be hard to hold out.

(8) The Risk Factor has to be respected and is another local who loves his home track. Won by a big space over 2100m last start so you’d expect he will run this trip but just needs to handle the rise in grade.

(9) Aurora’s Symphony arrives in good form from Victoria and looks to get a nice set up rising to 2400m where he has won at before.

(2) Mandela Effect was a huge run for 2nd last start over 1400m in the Thomas Lyons. Really like him stepping to the mile here where he has a strong record and should be right at peak fitness now. Hopefully he can get the gaps at the right time and should be hard to beat.

(11) And Beyond has had his colours lowered a touch since heading up to Victoria following a strong of wins down here. With that being said he is never far away and he looked to be getting warm late on last start.

(3) Justacanta was good having first start for the new stable and rarely knows how to run a bad race. I think the mile might be some query and looks short enough at $3.

Billy Bestford

Billy has been an avid racing fan ever since he and a few mates started a punters club once they turned 18. Following the initial punters clubs, he was properly hooked after landing a nice collect on Admire Rakti in the 2014 Caulfield Cup and has had a soft spot for Japanese horses ever since. Is a massive fan of 'blinkers first time' and has been known to enjoy a 'Hail Mary' multi. Loves punting across metro Sydney and Melbourne every Saturday but isn't scared to venture West late in the day to find a Pikey special.
