An eight-race card at Mornington for Friday, December 4th, with four maidens and four bm58s. It’s an absolute impossible task to find the winners with large fields and plenty of unraced steeds doing battle. Despite this, and on the back of an old-fashioned punting lesson yesterday, The Horse has found a couple worth playing in Race 1, Race 4 and his Best Bet in Race 8.

The day commences, as expected, with a maiden over the 1200 metres. There are only a couple that have race-experience, with (8) Yesmeena the pick of them. She didn’t do much last campaign, but has come back and placed twice in two outings. Given the quality of competition is a query, but she comes here with match fitness and will find the 1200 metre no trouble. You can’t ignore the Maher/Eustace shine and most don’t stay maidens for very long.

Of the unraced (3) Blink Twice performed well to win a jumpout at Caulfield and can continue to come-on. The 1200 metres first-up may be a query, but there has been some early support. Similarly, Danny O’Brien (while off the boil at the moment) does have them primed pretty quickly so we can expect a good showing. He does get the tongue-tie on today which may suggest he was biting down in the jumpout—and further improvement can be expected. At the odds, happy to play both evenly here to gain a return.

The Dabernig/Hayes runner (5) Sense Of Doubt goes on top here after a decent second place at this track and distance last start. On that occasion he ran only strongly albeit outclassed by the winner by a couple of the lengths. He can improve on that showing with Daniel Stackhouse staying on-board and drawing a good gate.

The threats are everywhere with (7) Crafty Bob the most likely after a first-up place. The increase in distance is a positive with assumed increased fitness. (10) Alterno next.

We need to wait until the closer to find the Best Bet on the card in (5) Quesadilla. Five starts for one win and four places, she comes back presumably fitter and stronger. She arguably should have had more wins last preparation and progressed through the grades, but we find her here still in a bm58. She rates on top but gets a pretty ordinary gate, where she’ll need to come across and find a spot in running (ideally alongside the leader). The query is an apprentice jockey—yes it comes with a claim, but a senior rider here would have been ideal (given Walker and Kah both have one ride at Mornington before heading into town for the Moonee Valley meeting).

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
