It’s a solid card of racing at Morphettville on Friday and The Horse has found three races on the card to build the bank.

A solid card of racing at Morphettville on Friday which progresses in quality throughout the day—concluding with a bm75 in the last.

The Horse has found a few runners that can hopefully build the bank in Race 1, Race 4 and Race 7.

It is a pretty desperate looking maiden here to commence the proceedings. Heading the market is (1) Silber On Red who has not shown anything which suggests he has any firmer chance of taking this out than any of the other runners. As such, pretty keen to take him on. The two main runners in this small 6-horse field are (2) Effortkat and (6) Sellix who met last time placing third and second respectively.

Effortkat was first-up and should improve on that run—but he’ll need to. He was beaten by Sellix by 2.5 lengths. Sellix was pretty unlucky not to have won that day—and after 18 starts for 11 places, she genuinely deserves a win. That was arguably her best run, and both horses maintain their respective jockeys. Sellix should have the speed to lead or pull alongside Effortkat and attempt to keep him pocketed. If she gets the break she might be tough to catch. If she is ever going to break her maiden, than surely this is the right race. At the current price, a saver on Effortkat can still turn us a profit.

Happy to take on the favourite here (1) Zoulah at the poison odds of $1.55. Given the Zoustar mare does drop in grade here after taking third place in a bm68 at this track and distance last start, and looks to have a pretty good future, but the quality of that opposition is really yet to be determined. Whereas today, she meets a quality opponent in (2) Unlaced.

The Hickmont trained mare (from New Zealand) is having her first Australian start, previously running 6 times across the ditch for 2 wins and 2 places. She ran fourth in a Group 2 and competed in the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks. Given those races were over 2100 and 2400 metres respectively, her best is clearly over a trip, but she has already won in this grade over 1600 metres. The queries are whether she is ready to fire, and whether the 1600 first-up isn’t too much to take on. So watch for market support.

She is clearly the quality runner in this race, and at the price, pretty keen to take her on top.

Like the look of the top weight (1) Picargo in this bm62 grade race over 1200 metres. This preparation he has been super consistent, winning a CL1 and progressing to L2 and bm64 to place second on both occasions. Last race he was second to Ambidazzle, which looks okay form coming into this. He is also booked in at Gawler on Saturday in a lower-graded race worth more prize-money than this one. If he runs, than he is going to be hard to beat.

Part of the confidence stems from the number of things against the other runners.(5) Owl On The Prowl has run in better company, but failed to make an impression. While (4) Munster is likely to get the lead, but is up in grade and hasn’t yet been proven at this level. He really should have been winning one of his previous starts this preparation for me to have more confidence. Given he should be coming on with fitness now.

The stable-mate of Picargo, (2) Dreamed, also goes around, and has the more seasoned jockey on-board. (3) Ranger Frank is not without a hope.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
