Newcastle Racing Tips: Monday, October 26th

Joshua Reed takes a look at the Newcastle meeting on Monday afternoon and provides us with his best bets from the card.

We head to Newcastle on Monday afternoon where conditions are wet and we’re currently faced with a Heavy 8 track that could get even worse. Joshua Reed has taken a close look at the wet weather form and provides us with his best bets from the card in Race 1, Race 6 and Race 7 today.

With the rain set in here in Newcastle, (3) Cecilia looks a nice bet in the opener of the day. Last start at Port Macquarie, she was the beaten favourite in a three way go over the 1200m.

(2) Standing Bear was a winner on the day over the same distance and like Cecilia was first-up, though he ran almost a second slower. He now must step up in class, on track conditions where he is untested.

Cecilia is yet to miss a place in five starts and is proven on the soft going which she will get here. She is drawn nicely to sit predominantly and will be hard to run down in the later stages on the contest.

I think (4) Leisa Louise can make an impact on her home track and will improve off her last start effort. She came into the race nicely at Port Macquarie before being crowded near the 200m mark which halted her acceleration. She was then hindered again around the 150m mark before ducking in to obtain a clear running to the line. I was really impressed with the way she picked up from there and would have finished a lot better than fifth had she been given the opportunity. The step up to 1350m is ideal and she has proven last preparation that a rain affected track will give her no issues. There isn’t a lot of speed in this race, so I am expecting her to sit in a similar position to last start around midfield before peeling off the runners in front as they enter the straight.

It feels a bit weird that I am previewing the Jungle Juice Cup at Newcastle instead of Cessnock, but here we are.

(2) Oakfield Captain is coming into this race first-up since July and boasts some nice little records which makes him over the odds here. Firstly, his first-up record is good with his two faulters against being over 1200m and ridden a touch worse than midfield. Although his stats are not flash on wet tracks, most of those losses were against company in town and has been competitive against weaker fields away from Sydney. His stats suggest he also performs well at this track and with a nice draw and little speed in the race, he will be sitting handy around third or fourth in the run. I think he is going to give us a massive sight in this race and the money on offer makes him a juicy each way bet.
