The track is currently rated a Soft 6 with the rail out 7m the entire course.

Pretty keen on (6) Gallant Ranger here for Michael Lane and Chris Parnham. This horse was huge first up at Northam when backed from $11 into $6.50. He sat three-wide the trip near the back of the field and still ran home in the second-fastest final sectionals to run 3^rd. He’s drawn wide again today so we’ll need some luck, but this is a winnable race and the Lane/Parnham combination is always one to watch.

Playing a couple here.

If Parnham was riding (2) Tradensia, I’d be more confident in her being ready for this first up. But I know for a fact she was set to win first up last prep – and that was reflected by her set up, where she had two trials and the senior jockey on despite carrying 60kg. Just the one trial this time in and the 3kg apprentice on board to take the weight off, which suggests to me she may need the run.

I think (7) Tambora has a bit of ability and I don’t doubt it will be ready to go fresh. Bolted in on debut and then bumped into the smart La Farola, before winning again third up. Probably had enough in his final two starts last prep, so the break came at a good time and his recent trial was good. Drawn 2, should lead and be hard to run down.

(4) Arnie’s Boy has been incredibly luckless this prep. Sat four-wide the trip three starts ago, was held up badly two starts ago, and sat three-wide the trip again when only run down late last start. Gets a horror draw again today but he has a good record at Pinjarra, Parnham sticks with him and with any luck at all I think he can be a big player here.

The final one I’ll be on is (5) Glamour Packed. Not sure if he will be ready yet or whether we might be going one run too early, but his first up run at Northam was good and he gets conditions to suit today. He’s never finished out of the top two from three starts on soft ground. Has a good record at the distance and gets a good draw, so should be competitive. Might just need one more run but he’s double figure odds.

Chris Parnham is the theme of the day here. Hard to know what shape (9) Wilchino is in ahead of her return here given she comes into it first up with no trial, but if she’s anywhere near her best she should account for this field. The 1000m straight can sometimes throw up a few odd results but she’s got speed to burn and it looks a good race for her to kick off her campaign.

Tim Geers

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
