Randwick Racing Tips: Saturday, December 12th

A couple of nice yet challenging Highway races to start the day here and I will be betting around two here. (10) Affinity Beyond has been nothing but impressive as she looks to make it four in a row. She led the entire way first-up at Wagga, showing good acceleration over the final 200m. Simon Miller comes up to ride her which is positive, and she should be in a prominent position throughout this race. Hopefully she doesn’t burn too much energy early so she can utilize that finishing burst.

(2) Step On Fire is the other I want to play at each way odds. He is going for three in a row after two very convincing wins at Muswellbrook and Scone. Cameron Crockett has had this date planned for a while, so I expect him to be in tip top condition and for Reece Jones to give him a peach throughout. He comes in nicely after the 3kg claim.

(6) Remlaps Gem was scratched at Scone for this one. Was very good first-up at Muswellbrook and I expect improvement.

(7) Danebook next best.

The second of the Highway races isn’t as deep as the first. (13) Pinnacle Prince looks the one after a successful first campaign where he won nicely at Scone before coming to town on only his second start to run a massive race behind stablemate It’s Me. He beat home the rest of the field that day by 2.8 lengths and looked to be an impressive colt. He has since had a 12-week let-up and had one soft trial with the expectation that he will bring in some residual fitness. Expect him to be flying late.

(2) Halcyon House is nice each-way odds coming into this second-up. First-up looked poor but the trainer did state he needed the run. 2kg claim of Tom Sherry brings him into calculations

(3) Siege Warfare is over the odds and can run a bold race.

(4) Crackneck next best.

This is a tough race with moderate speed, but I think we can have a decent each way bet on (6) Salina Dreaming. She has drawn nicely out of barrier 3 and she should be able to settle midfield and save the energy for a late crack at them. She is coming off two nice trials and in her latest she was pushed out late behind Café Royal. Hugh Bowman takes the ride and he even went to Newcastle to ride her in the trial which gives me more confidence. She looks likely to sit off a nice pace before peeling out in the straight. Definitely worth a bet.

(7) El Cohete is another I will be betting around who has come up massive odds. He was good in a midweek BM72 where Regan Bayliss rode for luck and burst through the centre to win by under half a length. He beat home Ulysses who was a comfortable winner on Wednesday and was favourite when these two clashed. Although it is a poor draw, expect Bayliss to employ similar tactics to last start by riding for luck. He won’t be going around without my money.

(13) The Face is a nice horse and very progressive. He is entered for Kembla Grange also, so tread carefully.

This is a very thin staying race and I have gone the way of a gelding who has never run beyond 2100m. (8) Accountability won nicely three runs back before backing it up at Kembla Grange. Last start he just couldn’t bridge the gap on (7) Significance and went down by 0.7 lengths. He meets him 5.5kg better of for that run which is perfect, and I think the quick back-up suits. He gives the indication 2400m won’t be an issue and has a low weight with a senior rider booked, so it is a perfect time to attempt the distance.

(1) Sweet Thomas is a dead set stayer and is coming back from 3200m to 2400m. James McDonald will take the ride and if this becomes a test, he will be right there.

(9) Purrfect Deal is a progressive middle-distance horse who is looking to take the next step. Have to respect the fact they are bringing him down from Brisbane for this.

(3) He Runs Away next best.

Always tough to line these two-year-old races up, especially with so many first starters, but I loved the trial of (3) Overmann. The Hinchinbrook gelding showed good early pace to sit handy in the trial and Tommy Berry even gave him a little shake at the top of the straight to which he responded nicely to head off rival (4) Acrobat. Our bloke cruised to the line whilst Acrobat was pushed out and looked a touch one paced. Happy to go with this bloke here and expect him to be prominent from the wide draw.

(11) Ashema is scratched from Brisbane for this and was second in a very fast trial. She might have found one better here but she looks a nice filly.

(4) Acrobat wasn’t cheap, but showed he was a bit flat late in the trial. Expect him to improve over time.

(8) Belle O’Ballee next best.

We already know this girl has class and I am expecting her to bring it on Saturday. (1) Tailleur was nothing but impressive over her four runs last preparation, topping it off with a massive six length win at Moonee Valley in late August. Now I know her form has been primarily over the winter but the way in which she dominated was massive. She starts off in a Fillies and Mares BM88 here and I think they have bigger things in mind this preparation. Expect her to be forward throughout her run and be right there in the end.

(2) Threeood returned as the Threeood of old, making light work of her opposition at Rosehill last start. Not many gave her a chance after a mixed couple of races towards the end of her preparation. Expect her to be right in this.

(5) Snapdancer heads up from Melbourne for a crack at some of Sydney’s money and she has a nice resume. She can be a thorn here from a good draw.

(10) Starla next best.

This looks a tough race with many that could win it. I am with (4) Passage of Time here after what I thought was a nice run first-up. Despite beginning awkwardly, I thought his run was very good and he didn’t get the split needed in the straight and had to come around his opposition. Still finished the race off nicely and finished in fifth. The extra 100m is right up his alley and providing the rail holds off, the good surface will be to his liking. Expect him to be flying late at attractive odds.

(10) Spaceboy has been in terrific form for a while and looks to push forward in this race. He handles any going and has no weight on his back. I’ll have a small stake on him.

(3) Snitz is expected to bounce back.

(7) Athiri next best.

The feature race of the day is the Villiers and I think Angela Davies can go home with 2 winners on the day. (12) Through The Cracks was very impressive late in the Festival Stakes but Robbie Dolan got too far back on the gelding. He flew home from 14^th to finish 2.7 lengths in seventh and probably would have went close had they got a closer run. Randwick will suit this bloke a lot better and with Brenton Avdulla aboard, should get him into a closer position. We will need luck, but clear air, he should run down his opposition if close enough.

(5) Reloaded was very good at Kembla Grange from the second half of the field and should get an improved run with James McDonald aboard. Much like our top pick, with clear air, he will be in the finish.   

(3) Outrageous won the Festival Stakes and will have to do a little work from the draw, but is classy.   

(15) Criaderas next best.

I’ll be very surprised if (12) Spirit Ridge doesn’t go close here. He ran very well at Newcastle first-up and was beaten by a Newcastle specialist and very fit horse in Super. Although he goes up in grade, he drops 4kg on the last run and stays at a mile. I expect Josh Parr to be somewhat positive on the gelding and for him to be very strong over the closing stages, especially with the blinkers going on first time.

(14) Regal Stage is fit, been saluting in the country cups and will give the field something to catch.    

(4) Matowi is draw awkwardly but will be hitting the line late.    

(15) Kirwin’s Lane next best.

Very tough race to finish on, landed with (3) Monegal. The only issue she has to overcome is the 59kg but she has proven she is all class. It will help her cause if the rains come but she handles all going. She won well against good opposition last start at Kembla Grange in this grade. James McDonald will take the ride and I am unsure if the inside is ideal or not this early but at the current price, it is worth the risk.

(6) Snowfire is aiming for four in a row after saluting at Rosehill first-up. 1400m suits and rain if it hits.

(9) Spanish Point will be nearing peak fitness and gets the blinkers applied. Could find worse $20+ shots.    

(11) Promotions next best.
