Not surprising to see a maiden with limited chances in the first, with the favourite (3) Yulong Shot the stand-out in terms of lead-in form. Consecutive third places he looks to have an advantage on this field. His last run at Pakenham was his best to date, coming from seventh in running to arrive in the money. The slight jump to 1717 metres is a positive, assuming he stays close-enough in the transit. Daniel Stackhouse will know where he needs to be, and can get us off to a winning start!

I liked the first-up run for (10) I Am Beautiful from the Greg Eurell stable. He started averagely, and was quite far back coming into the final stages, but she managed to let-down nicely after being pushed along early. Her last 400 metres were really good. She ultimately got beaten by some way behind Big Flash and Bellinger, who have both gone on to race in better company, but with a better place in running she would have been much closer. (7) Legal Zou looks the obvious danger.

Last preparation’s form of (11) Perfect World is good enough to be in contention here. Racing in BM70 grades she placed behind horses like Succeed Indeed and Divine Diosa. She gets a favourable race here first-up, and while the fresh form is the only query, she is clearly better than maiden grade. The price is a little skinny, but she deserves to be favourite—and I am willing to take the odds. Outside of her it’s a bit of lottery, so taking her as a stand-out selection.

Pretty keen to play two here including the short priced favourite here in (7) Teramia. She missed the start in her debut and sat second last throughout the run. She bolted home to round them all up (3-4 wide) to win convincingly. A repeat of that performance and she is going to be hard to beat. Her second-up run was disappointing, where Jamie Kah appeared to have her in a nice spot before fading dramatically. A similar run to that, and she gets beaten again. The slight query has me placing her as a saver.

In case she doesn’t turn (1) Delusions for Maher/Eustace can take advantage. She has a lovely first-up record and has performed well in BM70 company already. At double the price she will map similarly to the fav, and they may just fight it out.

This looks like a good race for (8) Shotmaker for the Price/Kent yard. Goes well first-up, and finds a suitable distance and track. He should get the lead from the handy draw and can dictate terms. The risk will be if he isn’t ready to fire first-up, and becomes vulnerable late, but that’s unlikely. He has raced in Group 3 races previous preparations, so this class should be well within grasp. The dangers are everywhere, with (1) Designer Chef super consistent and (3) Open Minded backing up after a win.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
