Sandown Racing Tips: Saturday, May 1st

A cracking nine-race card today at Sandown and Billy Bestford brings you a full preview of the day, including his best bet in Race 8.

With the Sydney Autumn Carnival coming to a close we now turn our attention south with some quality racing at Sandown today, which will complement a strong G1 meeting in Adelaide.

Racing will be on the hillside track today at Sandown where it is currently rated a Good 4 and the rail in the true position the entire way round.

We’ve got a handicap for the 2 year olds to kick off the card and it looks a tricky little start to the meeting. Going to side with (4) Repeal with little confidence however. If you can forgive the poor debut run on a very wet track, his recent jumput was very good and he should go forward and can get away with this one.

(7) Glamour And Glory had a wide run on debut and stuck on well for 3rd. That looked a handy maiden and will take plenty of improvement from that performance.

(1) Gulf Of Suez has the clear best exposed form but has been struggling of late. If he can repeat some early career performances he can win.

(8) Harlem Blues is flying at the moment. Had been building all prep to a big win and he produced that last start in a similar race to this. Should be able to sit handy from the low draw and should still be on an upward trend 4th up today.

(3) Lady Solly tackled a strong BM90 two back where she ran well considering the winner broke the track record. Was only just beaten by Harlem Blues last start back in this grade and will once again take some catching.

(1) Fight looks the value runner in the race and could generally pull out a good fresh run. Been competitive in this grade and $11 looks generous.

(5) Cordilla looks hard to beat going off her last start victory. She rounded up a strong field at Caulfield to win in good time and looks ready to go on with it out to 1300m now. Providing she gets some luck from gate 1, she should be winning.

(9) Altai Ranger looks the obvious danger. Has been solid in two runs this prep carrying big weights. Won’t know himself here with just 51kg on his back after Hefel’s claim and is sure to be in the finish.

(2) My Pendant can be a big improver up to 1300m. Was well beaten by Cordilla fresh but this trip suits her much better and on her best runs she can win at a price.

Very keen to see (3) Grand Promenade stepping up to 2400m here on the back of two very good runs over 2000m. Was only narrowly beaten in both of those by some in-form horses and looks ready to peak today. Looks one of the better chances of the day.

(5) Miyake looks the main danger as he steps out to a much preferred trip. Did enough last start to suggest he will take improvement from that and will enjoy being back on top of the ground here.

Going to break one of my punting rules here and put a ‘Yulong’ on top. (3) Yulong January ran very well despite the result fresh, where the track conditions on the day did not suit horses trying to make ground. He flew home there and this looks arguably an easier race.

Was very impressed with (7) Dice Roll on his Australia debut and will only strip fitter from that. Took some riding to get into the race but really fought on strongly in the straight. Providing he doesn’t want further now, should be going close again.

(4) Lim’s Cruiser is a 1400m specialist and looks ready to win after a narrow 2nd over 1200m last start down in Tasmania. Should enjoy every favour from gate 3.

Think my old mate (10) Garvoc is a decent each-way chance in an open race. Happy to see him stretch out in trip for the first time and has been racing consistently this prep. His run two back behind Incredulous Dream would go close to winning this. happy to have something on today.

(5) Charleise bolted in for a well deserved win last start after not having much luck leading into that. Is clearly flying, has had a little freshen up for this and will be charging home late as always.

Looks the toughest race of the day but have a slight leaning towards (1) Fluorescent Star. The stable have her in flying form 3 wins and a 3rd from her last 4 starts. Ran 3rd to Incredulous Dream and Garvoc two back so will get a direct form reference in the race prior. Like the claim for Lachy King and I think she will be in the finish again.

(6) Palace Whisper is another who is in good form, with her only miss this prep coming two back after pulling up lame. Should enjoy a good run from the gate and another win looks close.

(11) Transplant looks the horse with the most upside, coming into this on the back of a 6L demolition job in maiden grade. Ran good time there and could easily go on with it today.

Thought (3) Approach Discreet was a very good chance in this. Was a huge run 1st up at a big price and went straight into the blackbook from that run. Is a deadset Sandown specialist, unbeaten from 3 runs at the track and is always better performed with a run under the belt.

(7) Spring Choice crossed the line with Approach Discreet last start and was also doing best work late. Will be nearing peak fitness 3rd up and will be hard to beat.

I like the blinkers going on for (2) Valaquenta here. Arguably should’ve won last start in a hot race at Caulfield and looks set up for a gun run from the gate today. Actually don;t mind the drop to 1000m where he has had most of his success.

(5) Thudson walked in fresh and now steps up in grade today. Has plenty of speed and will probably lead them up from the wide gate. Wouldn’t surprise to see him go on with it.

(10) Sweetzou is ready to peak here 3rd up. Two good performances leading into this show the horse is going well and the stable is flying of late.
