2026 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Tips, Odds & Betting Preview

The Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) brings together one of the most open fields of the Melbourne spring at Caulfield this Saturday, September 19.

Lady Shenandoah heads betting after an excellent return in the Memsie Stakes, but the handicap conditions give several talented rivals a significant weight advantage. With 16 runners plus two emergencies and speed drawn across the track, barriers and race shape will be every bit as important as raw ability.

Lady Shenandoah Draws to Get Every Chance

Lady Shenandoah returned with a strong fourth in the Memsie Stakes, finishing behind Beiwacht after settling midfield and making steady ground in a race that favoured horses nearer the lead.

That was her first start since finishing second in the Queen of the Turf Stakes during the autumn and should give her a solid fitness base. Craig Williams retains the ride and barrier one allows him to save ground throughout.

The challenge is the 56kg impost. She is the highest-rated mare in the field and clearly deserves to be near the top of the market, but this is a deep handicap and several progressive runners receive three kilograms or more from her. At around $4.80, she is the horse to beat rather than an automatic bet.

Regal Award Has Been Set for This

Regal Award resumes for Phillip and Tommy Stokes after winning the Group 3 Fred Best Classic over 1400m at Eagle Farm. That performance showed what he can do when allowed to travel comfortably before building through his gears.

Lachlan Neindorf has developed a productive partnership with the sometimes quirky gelding and returns to the saddle here. Barrier four is close to ideal and the 52.5kg weight gives Regal Award a substantial advantage over the established Group 1 horses.

First-up into a race of this quality is a demanding assignment, but the placement suggests the Sir Rupert Clarke has been a spring target. He makes each-way appeal around the $7 mark.

Angel Capital Ready to Improve

Angel Capital was well beaten in the Memsie Stakes, although he endured a wide run and never found the right rhythm. His previous form included a strong third when resuming in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes behind Cosmic Crusader.

The Waller-trained entire draws barrier seven this time and Ben Melham should be able to find cover. He carries 56kg, but his best closing figures over 1400m put him right in the race if he can reproduce them.

He is more difficult to trust than Lady Shenandoah at their respective prices, yet a cleaner run could produce a substantial turnaround.

Sepals Defends His Crown

Last year’s winner Sepals returns to defend the title from barrier five. He has not raced since finishing second in the Kingsford Smith Cup during the Brisbane winter, but his previous preparation showed he belongs at Group 1 level.

Cliff Brown has again targeted this race and Ethan Brown should secure a favourable position from the draw. The rise to 56.5kg makes the task more difficult than 12 months ago, but Sepals has the right Caulfield profile and cannot be left out of calculations.

Evaporate and War Machine Face Wide Gates

Evaporate arrives in excellent form after winning the So You Think Stakes over 1500m at Sandown. Blake Shinn takes the ride and the gelding is fit, versatile and proven around Caulfield. Barrier 17 is the obvious complication, with Shinn needing to choose between going forward or conceding ground.

War Machine also drew wide in barrier 18. He finished third first-up in the Bletchingly Stakes and has been kept fresh since. Damian Lane will need luck to slot in, but the gelding has enough tactical speed to make his own position.

Both are winning chances on ability. Their prices need to compensate for the work they may be forced to do from the outside stalls.

Lightweights Bring the Value

Persian Spirit steps to 1400m after building a consistent record at shorter trips. He gets in on the 52kg minimum and Damien Thornton can ride him quietly from barrier nine. The distance is the question, but his finishing strength suggests it is worth testing.

Sabaj is another lightly weighted runner with upside. Jamie Melham rides from barrier 13 and he will need the breaks to fall his way, but he has enough early speed to avoid being buried too far back.

Yellow Jersey, Planet Red and Sun God are all capable on their day, while emergencies Harry’s Yacht and Tennessee Bound would add further depth if they gain a start.

The two widest runners, War Machine and Evaporate, have decisions to make early. Both can race prominently, while Lady Shenandoah should hold a position behind the speed from barrier one. Regal Award can settle in the first half from barrier four without being pressured.

A genuine tempo appears likely in the large field. That should give horses such as Angel Capital and Persian Spirit their opportunity late, although the Caulfield 1400m still rewards runners that can hold a position before the turn.

Lady Shenandoah has the best exposed recent Group 1 form and maps beautifully, but she is conceding weight to several dangerous rivals. Regal Award gets the combination of a soft draw, light weight and proven 1400m performance that is often decisive in this race.

Sepals is the defending champion and looks ready to run well fresh, while Angel Capital is capable of improving sharply with a more economical run. Persian Spirit is the longer-priced runner with upside if he handles the rise in distance.
