Benalla Racing Tips: Tuesday, March 23rd

Benalla is the lone meeting to go ahead on Tuesday and Billy Bestford is keen to bet in three races on the card.

We’ve got an eight-race card for this Tuesday’s meeting at Benalla, where the track is rated a heavy 8 at the time of writing.

The meetings at Gosford and Beaudesert have already been abandoned, and with more rain predicted we could expect another downgrade into the heavy 9 or 10 range here. The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Billy Bestford has found three races he’s keen to bet in on the card – Race 1, Race 3 and Race 8.

Never usually too keen to dive into a midweek maiden but there looks a good winning chance here at a more than fair price.

(3) Miracle Day resumes after being put away following a flashing run for the 4th in his only start last prep. The stable have spaced his runs and look to be taking plenty of time with this gelding who has shown glimpses of ability. That 4th placing was behind the likes of Esta La Rocca and Frederick The Dane who have both gone on to perform well in stronger races. He also boasts a 2nd to his name on debut behind Supreme Idea. That horse has obviously gone on to place in some strong group races and win the listed Lohnro Plate. Has now won a jumpout recently at Caulfield and looks ready to fire first up here. Will be getting back from the wide barrier which looks the main concern but happy to have something on at an each-way price.

Another maiden but (11) Yatton looks the class in this race, returning to this grade since last being seen finishing down the track in the G1 VRC Oaks. Obviously found the top level a bit tough but still managed to beat 6 horses home that day and the stable clearly hold her in high regard. The 1400m today is well short of her best but expecting her to be a touch too good for her rivals anyway. Has placed over this trip when first up last time in so can expect her to match motors with most of these and will take a huge amount of improvement since that debut preparation. Draws perfectly in gate 6 with the in-form Dan Stackhouse to ride.

(4) Ha She looks the obvious threat and has been running well lately with a breakthrough win looking close. Finished 2nd to Marabi a couple of starts back, who looks like a serious group-level horse. Wasn’t suited by the way the track played in her next start but continues to run on well into the placings. Will probably be spotting Yatton a start in the run but will be there late to challenge. Think the winner definitely comes from the above two so can play them in exotics if you wish.

Very interested to see the Matt Laurie trained (8) Five Star Decanter step out for his 2nd career start here today. There was a bit of a boom on this horse in the lead up to his debut where he jumped $1.40 and easily accounted for a maiden field at Echuca. Takes the natural leap up in grade now and I think from what I’ve seen, he can measure up again. Loved the way he loomed up to the leaders and put them away in the space of a few strides like good horses do. Looks to have his fair share of talent but must admit the wide barrier and the heavy track are slight queries. Showed enough pace on debut to think they would roll forward early and try find a prominent position in running. Any luck throughout will see this horse go very close and I think it might have a bright future.

(2) Sig Positano looks the main danger and is proven to get through the wet conditions. Comes into this off a good win at Pakenham and stays in the same class for this race today. Depending what the market does it may be worth having a saver if this horse gets out to an each-way sort of price.
