This looks quite a poor Class 1 with not a lot of depth, so I have decided to go with (1) Backfill second-up. The five-year-old gelding ran home well last start at Lismore and looked the winner 150m out before peaking late with the 58kg. He has drawn much better here to sit a bit more prominent than last start and the drop back to 1100m is unknown but could be right up his alley with his new stable. He won’t find a much easier class 1 to try and get that second win against his own sex, so look for him late in the piece.

Another race on the card which only has a couple that can win it and I think (5) Hiroko can get back to her better form that she showed last preparation. It has been a bit of a mixed preparation, running into Northern Wilderose two back at Lismore then she was just fair at Port Macquarie despite being slow away. The key for her here is the step up to 1400m which I think she will excel at, as she showed last preparation in the TAB Highway. Although she is up in class, she gets that weight relief down to 56.5kg and the booking of Kirk Matheson is a good one as he has a 19% winning strike rate at Grafton. From the inside draw, I hope they kick up and sit predominantly as that is when she has run her best races. It’s one of those races where we are either going to look like geniuses or we just read it wrong.

There are no prizes for finding this one and could be used as a bank builder or multi legs. (2) Dangerous Dan has come up a truly short price and so he should after his last start thrashing over the 2000m, beating what you could call a similar field by 5.8L! He goes up 3kg on that run which in the past hasn’t proven an issue and the extra 200m looks like it will suit. I think they have found the niche to this bloke, so expect him to win again.

This race sets up nicely for (2) Jule’s Spirit after finally drawing a gate over something longer than 1000m. Since coming to John Shelton from Barry Lockwood’s stable, he has only had two starts beyond 1200m, drawing barriers 10 and 11. He draws barrier 3 here which will ensure he doesn’t have to do the early work to hold a forward position and will sit ideally behind the leaders. One thing he possesses over a couple of his close rivals here is he is well into his campaign whereas some are coming in first-up. I am banking on this fitness edge to get him over the line.

After winning convincingly on debut and earning a benchmark of 55 (which is higher than all her rivals except the top weight), (9) Super Slick takes the step up into a class 1. This is the best way for her to step up, stepping up against her own sex which could provide the winning move. She showed a nice kick last start to hold off the field at Ballina by 2L with no weight on her back. She goes up 1.5kg here despite the claim but she gets in nicely against her rivals and with a run under her belt she should show plenty of improvement. I will concede the draw is against her a touch, but she showed last start that the draw was no issue. She is an amazing price and I think she is the best bet of the day, let’s hope I am right!
