Although the favourite does look hard to beat, I think our bloke has a good chance to knock him off. (1) Oakfield Cherokee was an impressive maiden winner last start at Grafton and absolutely relished the step up in distance winning by two lengths on the line. He gets a similar set-up here with Ashely Morgan on and the 59kg, even the draw is similar which will work fine on a fair Newcastle track. I love the slight step up in distance for him and I think he will love every inch of it. The only negative is he does get back, but really that is going to be a negative every time we talk about him. If he gets even luck, look for him late in the piece.

This bloke is probably getting to his right price now and I love the form before he went for his let-up. (6) Sapphires Son showed his versatility before his break, performing well from 1100m right up to 1870m. I think his last two runs, despite being longer than today’s distance, really showed his class going down by less than a length to Hubble over the mile then Lion’s Roar over the 1870m. He returns over the distance that he broke his maiden status in and is drawn to get a nice run throughout. Mitchell Bell is back on and he knows her well, so with a nice ride, we will get a nice viewing for our money.

(7) Dame Kiri is returning after a nice little break and is at an attractive price to have a dabble here first-up. Her first-up record is good, and she races well here at Newcastle and at this distance. She drops down in class from her last start second over the mile and although she goes up in weight, she has performed well enough with weight previously and will benefit with Andrew Gibbons aboard. I also want to play (9) Joey’s Chance here as an each-way play. He performed well enough first-up, running second to the speedy Emilette before winning nicely at Warren. I like the set-up for him from a nice draw and with Robert Thompson on, you know he will be given every chance with even luck. Definite knockout hope.
