It’s Kalgoorlie Cup day in WA as the racing heads to the Goldfields before opening day at Ascot next weekend.

The $150,000 feature headlines the nine-race card and is set to be run at 4.45pm local time (AWST).

I really think this is as good as a two-horse race in the Kalgoorlie Cup.

I’m already set at $4.00 on (3) Media Baron, who has now been backed into $2.90. It’s no surprise if you watch his run in defeat in the Boulder Cup last start. He was held up badly in the straight and flew home when he eventually got clear running. There’s a fair argument to be made that he should have won that race, and he should be even better suited today. He was jumping from 1400m to 2100m last start so should be at his peak with that run under the belt; he won at his fourth run last preparation and Paul Harvey makes the trip to Kal to ride him, replacing apprentice Kristy Bennett. Plenty to like about him and I expect him to be winning.

(7) Red Hot Tip has an ominous set up here. He’s had three runs back this prep, all with 60kg+ and he’s been ridden quietly in them all. Fourth up, up to 2200m and down to 54kg with barrier 1. No surprise to see him go forward; this is his grand final.

(8) Stafford’s Lad was a sneaky good run in the Boulder Cup last start. He’s another that didn’t get a great deal of luck. Can run a race at double figure odds.

(9) Sugar Cain next best.

Tim Geers

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
