Very little exposed form here to make a confident play, however (4) La Rocque trailed well at Geelong a week ago, and has already gained some market support, which looks a good enough steer. We are getting a decent price thanks to the fact that (8) Tranquil Bay has already raced once prior (for a third place) and takes favouritism. Confident level is low, but keen to start the meeting with a winner, and the card doesn’t get a whole lot easier.

Chris Waller horses … to bet or not to bet, that is the question? Both runners from the stable are right in the market with (3) Chompers the preferred horse over (7) Suppression. Chompers has put together two consecutive second places, both runs he was categorically beaten, however he did come from back in the field to overcome the bulk of the fields.  His last start over 1400 metres was the better of the two runs. He does look to have improvement over the 1600 metres now, and his natural get-back style will come to the fore. Waller’s preferred jockey Damian Lane takes the ride from Damian Thornton.

Thornton on the other hand stays on Suppression, and we can only assume Lane was given the option not Thornton. Suppression’s better run this preparation was first-up over a shorter distance, so don’t be surprised to see Suppression do the donkey work for the stable mate.

Tip: (3) Chompers - $3.10 at Topsport

Pretty happy to take the ever consistent favourite (4) Office Jim who comes in with a record of 14 starts for 2 wins and 8 places. He hasn’t yet won in this class, but does go well on this track, although likes some sting out of the track. He has landed two consecutive seconds in this grade prior, both by the thinnest of margins. If he maintains that form he will be tough to beat.

The Moody runner (9) Give Me Ten is getting support, and will be right in the mix after winning a BM58 by a couple lengths last start. He will attempt to pressure Office Jim, so tactics will be of great importance in this one. Saver!

Just a small caveat—‘this is impossible’. That said, I am keen to have something small on (8) Angaston who has been racing well at Murray Bridge in a lower grade, albeit in races that look no stronger than this. Two second places firstly in BM64 and then BM72 indicate that he is well placed here, and he now gets the services of Damian Lane. It’s his preferred distance and the race and booking just looks to have some nice timing to it. The gate is a pretty big deficit however, and he is going to need to have plenty of luck.
