Tim Geers picks out his best bets on Sunday’s 10-race card at Sha Tin.

Hong Kong racing takes place with a 10-race card at Sha Tin this Sunday.

The meeting consists of seven turf races and three on the dirt, with the rail in the C+3 position for the turf course.

Tim Geers has highlighted four races he’s keen to bet in – Race 3, Race 7, Race 8 and Race 10.

Originally wasn’t keen to get involved here but after further investigation, I’ll be backing (4) This Is Charisma each way. Only playing small as it’s a low race and this is a low horse and he’s also drawn barrier 14, but there is a little bit to like about his set up. First, Zac Purton goes on for the first time today – a big upgrade from Matthew Poon. He’s got a 27% strike rate for David Hall and they also have a +10.5% return on investment, which is quite good when the market often overrates Purton’s mounts. This horse has had two starts back from a long spell and he’s been ridden dead cold on both occasions. First up he drew wide, but last start he drew barrier 1 and was still snicked back. I thought he finished off well and hit the line nicely. He ran the fastest sectional from the 800m-400m and wasn’t bad in his final 400m either. Now gets the all-important class drop into Class 5, Purton goes straight on as mentioned, and he just needs some luck from the gate.

(1) Breeze Of Spring hasn’t been fara way in Class 4 and now drops into Class 5 for Moreira and Fownes. Likely to be very hard to beat.

(10) Fox Cheunger comes off a last-start win in this grade and wasn’t too harshly penalized so can win again.

This is a very open race and I’ll be backing three horses.

(1) Flying Victory finds a very suitable race and looks well-placed. He ran 3rd two starts ago and 4th last start, both in Class 3. Now drops back into Class 4, draws well in barrier 6 and should be very competitive.

(5) Eevee is having just his second start after finishing midfield on debut over 1000m. He was taken back and just appeared to be outpaced. He was beaten 5.6L but he actually ran the third-fastest final 400m of the race, which tells me he just got left flat-footed but was strong through the line. No surprise to see him step straight up to 1400m now and Purton sticks with him. Recent trial since his first run was good.

(8) Chiu Chow Brother looks the leader. He was run down late last start to finish 4th, beaten 2.5L. He gets Jerry Chau taking 2.5kg off today, so drops down to 53kg. He’ll be tough to run down from the front with the track very likely to be firm.

Another very competitive race with any number of chances. Two I’ll be backing.

(11) Like That has never run on the dirt before, so it’s hard to predict how he’ll go, but he’s absolutely flying, I’m convinced of it. He won five starts ago and since then, nothing has gone right for him. He’s either been caught up in traffic or has been planted wide without cover in just about every start, yet he continues to run well. He drops down to 51.5kg here and if he handles the dirt, he will run another good race today.

(6) Ka Ying Master represents the Yung/Purton combo. These two operate at 22% and their return on investment is a whopping +49%. The horse is a three-time winner in this class but there can be two versions of him. His last run was good, his recent trial was good, Purton goes back on and he draws barrier 1.

Chances don’t end there.

Quite keen on (5) Hall Of Champ here, who I think is close to the best of the day. He’s running super at the moment, winning by 2L over 1400m two starts ago before having very little luck at Happy Valley last start. I’ve been waiting for Purton to get a ride on this horse ever since he arrived in Hong Kong and finally today is the day. Draws well, should be hard to beat.

We see the Hong Kong debut of (3) Helene Allibor today, formerly Allibor in Australia who won the G2 Sandown Guineas. His recent trials haven’t been all that bad – he’s been under the whip but has made ground. Whether he needs further than the mile is a query and most times it can take these horses a while to acclimatise to Hong Kong, but I think at the odds I’ll be having something small on. Shinn has done all the work on him and jumps off Hall Of Champ to ride him.

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
